that spent their useless lives scurrying across the ground beneath
him. Content with his life, he had no idea what fate had in store
for him.

Larry had never
been in this part of town before. The houses were smaller and the
yards filled with old cars and other discarded items no longer
needed or wanted
Vacant eyes stared at him from behind
curtained windows.
Dogs growled as they strained at the
ends of their chains.
A porch rocker moved eerily back and
forth, activated by the wind.
Larry felt a little uneasy but he kept
doggedly on as he followed Vincent. He watched as the other boy
turned a corner and disappeared from view. Larry took off on the
run.
What happens if I lose him? If he
turns in somewhere and I don't see where he went?

"Here's your book, Annie." The librarian
handed the volume to Annie as she spoke. "I'm sorry you weren't able
to work for me this summer. I sure hope your mother is feeling
better. It's good of you to stay at home and help out. Amanda came
along after you were here and I hired her for the position."
Glen backed off, came around the
other end of the row and checked out the book he held. Had Glen
overheard Miss Perkins' comments? Annie couldn't be sure although he
made no comment and acted as though nothing was amiss. Glen was
friendly and talkative as they headed back to the house. Annie
answered in monosyllables.
With nothing to do that afternoon,
Annie actually picked up the book she had checked out and started to
read. She was extremely upset and appalled with the contents of the
book - the obsession of being thin at any cost, the distorted self
image, the denial - and wasn't able to continue.
The letter that had arrived from
Susan the same day hadn't helped.
"Don't tell me about God ... this
boring place ... pick my brain ... force me to eat ... fat and ugly
... rather die ... there is no God...."
Annie had made a furtive trip to the
kitchen before she read the rest of Susan's letter. She finished the
bag of cookies and the letter at the same time. The letter had upset
her more than she cared to admit.
Now she closed the book, curled into
a fetal position and started to cry. She cried for Susan and she
cried for herself. Unable to stem the flow of tears, she eventually
cried herself to sleep.

"You're still wearing your coat -
and that ridiculous hat should have gone to Goodwill years ago,"
said Glenda. "Here, let me help you off with them. We'll just
put Dad's picture on the dresser."
As she took hold of the picture,
Tillie held tight and pulled away. The faded sepia print ripped
in two. Speechless, they stood and looked at one another. "Oh
no!" said Glenda. She stood aghast as the pieces fluttered to
the floor.
"Get out," screamed Tillie....
Glenda's footsteps retreated down
the hall. Tillie bent to retrieve the torn pieces and clutched
them close to her heart. The face of a young man in his
thirties smiled up at her from one of the fragments.
Handsome fellow - I wonder who he is?
Follow Tillie and her family on
their journey through the ravages of Alzheimer's and its impact
on each individual member.
